Not since the Inquistion has so much concern been focused on "saving" Jewish souls - and it seems that everybody's doin' it from Evangelicals to Anglicans to Catholics.
Here's a one-year conversion timelime for your convenience
: The Vatican announces
that Pope Benedict XVI has penned a new Prayer for the Jews to replace that in the Missal of Blessed John XXIII (1962). The new prayer retains "the key idea of conversion to Christ". It reads something like this:
Let us pray, and also for the Jews: May our God and Lord enlighten their hearts, so that they may acknowledge Jesus Christ, saviour of all men. Let us kneel… Almighty and Everlasting God, who desirest that all men be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth; mercifully grant that, as the fullness of the Gentiles enters into Thy Church, all Israel may be saved. Through Christ our Lord. Amen
: The WEA (the World Evangelical Alliance) launches a campaign
targeting Jews for conversion via full page ads in the New York Times and other major papers. Some of Israel's best "Christian Zionist" friends appear as signatories on the highly publicized petition which states in part:
We believe that it is only through Jesus that all people can receive eternal life. If Jesus is not the Messiah of the Jewish people, He cannot be the Savior of theWorld (Acts 4:12).
We recognize that it is good and right for those with specialized knowledge, history and skills to use these gifts to introduce individuals to the Messiah, and that includes those ministries specifically directed to the Jewish people (1 Corinthians 9:20-22).
: The WEA strikes again
- only this time in Europe - with "The Berlin Declaration on the Uniqueness of Christ and Jewish Evangelism in Europe Today" which was developed by a special theological task force at a consultation in Berlin, Germany. An excerpt follows:
God calls believers to take the gospel to the world. Everyone needs to hear this message including the Jewish people. Proclamation to Israel was Jesus’ priority. It also reflects the apostles’ practice of going to the Jew first. Nothing has occurred since Jesus came that changes the need for Israel and the nations.
The WEA is no fringe group. It “ is a network of churches in 128 nations that have each formed an evangelical alliance and over 100 international organizations joining together to give a worldwide identity, voice and platform to more than 420 million evangelical Christians.” ]
February 2009 The Church of England votes in favor
of drawing up new guidelines promoting conversion - and everybody is fair game.
The Rt. Rev. Michael Nazir-Ali, said Christians had an obligation to witness the transforming love of Christ to all people. “We should not target anyone but no one is excluded either,” he said...
“Every person in my mind is a potential convert," said New Testament Assembly minister the Rev. Nezlin Sterling
March 2009 The Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism passed a resolution
“We believe that calling the Jewish people to accept Jesus (Y’shua) as the Messiah both of Israel and all nations is the biblical mandate and natural loving response to the belief that there is salvation only through personal faith in Jesus Christ,”
"Christian Zionists" were also targeted in the LCJE resolution:
“We believe they (some Christian Zionists) can dilute the gospel message by offering comfort apart from Christ, discourage evangelical Christians from witnessing to their Jewish friends and divert gospel resources which could be channeled toward Jewish evangelism...Therefore, we call on the leading proponents of Christian Zionism today to be transparent with Christians on whether Jewish evangelism is present in their theology.”
I guess what goes around, comes around...
